C901 User Reviews

Finally, C901 users can now share their reviews of the phone in one thread so others can compare different reviews without searching the entire internet

Ok, I'll start  I bought the phone about a year ago in early December, I found out about it on esato 2 months before I bought one, after looking at the photos it could take I decided it would be my next phone. I bought it mainly for the camera and that's where the phone excels.

Positives

Small, very pocketable
Very good camera quality
Fully customizable
Cheap compared to rivals
Loads of good features
Very durable when dropped
Fast, good performance
Good value for money
Battery life (depends on brightness)

Negatives

Heavy for its size
Bad video quality
Poor build quality
Keys are fingerprint magnet
Average HSDPA reception due to antenna placement
Annoying light sensor
No Wifi or aGPS

Overview

The C901 is very easy to use as a practical phone, the menus are simple and easy to flick through which makes the UI very fluid. It's very cheap but ironically has best camera out of the cyber-shot range. It gives you a better camera than the C905, at less than half the price! At such a low price (GBP £120 - £160) it's a bargain... that is, if you can find one to buy in the first place as Sony Ericsson have released the C901 to 'selected markets' only, which means it wont be released in the UK or most other countries so most people will have to buy online.

The phone is avaliable in 3 different colours, Noble Black, Precious Peach, and Sincere Silver. There is also the C901 Greenheart which uses waterborne paint to give the Ocean White colour.

Performance

The performance of the phone is one of the best things about the C901 and it's suprisingly good, the responce time between pressing a button and the phone responding is almost instantanous. Flicking through the camera album is also very fast. The multi tasking ability of the phone is what amazed me the most, you can run as many apps as you want at the same time and minimize and select any one you want to use with the dedicated shortcut button to the left of the D-pad. Even if you have about 10 apps running and music playing, the performance and speed of the phone is just
as fast as it was originally.

Hardware & Build quality

Physically the phone is small whilst also being very slim, it can fit into any pocket with no problem. However, for it's small size the phone is very heavy, compared to the K750 which is twice as thick, the C901 feels about double the weight. The keypad on the C901 is very different compared to standard keypads, the keys are curved with chrome strips seperating each row of keys.

A lot of people have mentioned how comfortable and easy to use the keypad is, I would have to dissagree with that. The keypad is very cramped, which is ok if you have small fingers, but if your fingers are quite big then you will end up pressing more than one key at once, or instead of pressing the curve of the key, you press the space between the two rows of keys. Because the keys are curved it's hard to text by feel, I have to look at what keys I'm pressing to get it right, I prefer the standard keypad of the K750. The keys on the front side of the phone aren't tactile, some keys need much more pressure than others (this might be just my phone)

The phone is housed in a plastic casing that runs along the outside of the front of the phone and curves slightly at the back. The problem is that the plastic housing feels very cheap. It's a very glossy plastic which will easily slip out of your hands, partly due to its weight as well.
It appears in it's product pictures as a matt, rubbery plastic that looks easy to grip, in reality the plastic is flimsy and shiny.

The battery cover, which is used to grip the phone, doesn't have much grip and tends to slip out your hands - many times I have given the phone to someone and they have nearly dropped it or commented about its weight. The battery cover will start to creak if it's opened many times, it's made out of a thin plastic cover that's very flimsy and you can bend it very easily in your hands.
The plastic housing is so glossy it makes it relflect any light touching it, these pics give an impression of the type of plastic used:

After a few months the chrome ring around the D-pad starts to wear off too and the camera cover tends to slide open without me realizing because it only takes a small force to open it and it doesnt provide much grip.
Here you can see the chrome ring around the D-pad coming off: (the blue tint is the reflection from the sky, the keys are solid black as they appear in other pictures)

A good point about the build quality is that, despite the phone casing being made out of plastic, the phone is actually very durable, I have dropped it many times onto concrete where a normal phone would have broken, but the C901 has survived every fall. It has a metal body underneath the plastic casing which makes it very robust.

Display

The 2.2" screen takes up most of the front side of the C901 and provides good colours and contrast. But it makes the 5MP photos hard to view in their original quality, you have to zoom in on the photo to show any detail. The screen is scratch resistant and it does a pretty good job at preventing damage.

The main issue with the display is the light sensor, the display can go from very dark to very light because the sensor isn't accurate. However, the light sensor can be disabled with a patch and most of the time the display is easy to read, even in very bright sunlight.

Camera

Arguably the best camera of 'C' and 'K' series from Sony Ericsson. Although it hasn't been marketed like the C905 has, suprisingly it produces much more detail in its photos. Photo quality is also better than the C902 (and C903) which lacks the xenon flash of the C901 and suffers from purple fringing.
Unfortunately the video recording quality is dissapointing, at QVGA resolution, the C901 definately isn't the phone to choose if you demand good video recording quality. But it makes up for it with it's still camera, it's potential is incredible. There are lots of camera settings which help you get the best shot in any sitaution. The xenon flash works well in most lighting conditions, it works especially well for night portraits. The C901 photo thread speaks for itself.

Reception

The antenna is in the bottom right hand corner, so every time you hold the phone in your right hand whilst browsing the internet or especially watching youtube videos, the HSDPA signal drops so you can't load pages quickly and videos freeze and buffer. There are no problems with calling and there hasn't been any situations where a call is ended due to loss of signal.

Conclusion

Overall the C901 is a great phone, it's only let down by it's plastic feel and build quality, but at the same time that saves money and brings the price of the phone down. It offers all the features expected of a standard Cyber-shot phone and combines that with a fantastic camera module at a very low price tag... it's the perfect choice for anyone wanting a simple, easy to use phone with a great camera. That's why I would certainly recommend the C901.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Studio an Online Entertainment Platform Review

Sony Ericsson has launched the Xperia Studio online entertainment platform, which is designed to enable artists and collaborators to create and share their content. The Sony Ericsson's Xperia Studio project invites creative thinkers, artists and intellectuals to use Xperia handsets to remake reality and the project aims to blur the boundaries between entertainment, technology and communications. Sony Ericsson also uses six Xperia Neos to capture a 360-degree bike ride and landscape photographer Joergen Geerds was asked to compose a unique 360-degree video uing a 3D printer, he developed a custom mount to hold six Xperia Neo phones in a ring that was welded to a mountain bike and Geerds had to convert every one of the several hundred thousand frames into JPEGs, merge them as stills and then reconvert the whole thing back into video. Sony Ericsson focuses on its values and its innovator’s image and this projects have been developed from surfers, scientists, artists and more from the likes of New York, Denmark and Australia.

Sony Ericsson launched Xperia Studio, an online entertainment platform for artists and collaborators to create and share their most innovative content. The initiative reflects Sony Ericsson's ongoing commitment to engage with consumers through high-quality entertaining content to inspire them to explore their Xperia phones in new ways. The Sony Ericsson's Xperia Studio invites creative thinkers, artists and intellectuals from collaborative artists in Denmark to astrophysicists in New York to take the range of Xperia handsets to their absolute limits and ultimately 'remake reality'. Content on the platform will be updated at regular intervals from the growing pool of contributors. The first phase of the project has seen collaborators from around the world use Xperia handsets to create content in unconventional and interesting ways – a flame-thrower camera flash, a view of the universe through the naked eye, capturing the perfect wave, creating a song from the ambient sounds of Paris and most recently capturing the extreme tricks preformed by a BMX crew in Brooklyn. Each project has been video-documented and can be viewed on the Xperia Studio platform. The project underlines Sony Ericsson's heritage as an innovator that continually strives to blur the boundaries between entertainment, technology and communications. The first round of collaborators involved in the Xperia Studio project includes:

  • Illutron, a collaborative interactive art studio in Copenhagen
  • Dr. Joshua Peek, a Hubble Fellow and astrophysicist at Columbia University, NYC
  • Ed Sloane, a lifelong surfer and innovative surf photographer from Victoria, Australia
  • Annabel Linquist – an artist and musician from New York
  • Torey Kish – an extreme sports enthusiast from Brooklyn

Videos:

Go Wide Or Go Home: Joergen Geerds used Xperia neos to record Mark Sevenoff’s ride down Slickrock Trail in 360 degrees. You can use your keyboard to watch every angle of it.Watch the 360 video now

Scanned: Torey Kish rides with "Act Like You Know," a BMX crew known for their web videos, riding trailers, and interviews. But now they’re showing off in a whole new way.

The Invisible Universe: What color is the night sky? Black? Sure, to the untrained eye. But with Xperia arc and Dr. Peek’s latest app, you can view the heavens in all their invisible glory: X-rays, gamma rays, far infrared, and more.

A Boatload of Inventors: It’s not the set-up for a joke — Illutron’s Collaborative Interactive Art Studio is literally on a boat. Which is where they hosted a three-day Xperia Studio Hack-A-Thon for code crackers of all levels. With flamethrowers.

Patch A Signal: The sampled micro-beats made from everyday sounds arranged by Bel Linquist into an interactive music video. Enjoy this love song backed by the sounds of the City of Lights.

SONY ERICSSON XPERIA X8

Sony Ericsson scored a big hit with last year's X10 Mini handset We have a soft spot for Sony Ericsson's pocket-sized smartphones. The Xperia X8 takes the Mini idea, but isn't as accomplished as its predecessor. It already feels quite retro: until recently t was running the Android 1.6 Donut version ot the Google CS.The 3in 320 x 480 screen is bright, vibrant and sensitive to the very slightest of touches  with a half-VGA resolution Combined with the plastic, cheap-feeling design, first impressions aren't great.

technology inside is good. You get GPS and location tagging, plus 3G and 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and support for microSD cards up to 16GB. There's a parsimonious internal memory allocation of just 128MB. Navigation on the X8 isn't bad. The multi-screen setup means you can have a screen for YouTube clips, one for email or web browsing and another for music playback, Swipe right and you get to a Google search box and Sony Ericsson's social network messaging feed, Timescape. Another interesting, Sony Ericssonspecific feature is support for LiveView. the Xperia X8 has recently been updated to Android 2.1, there's no native support for multitouch - you can't pinch to zoom, and typing is a single-finger affair.

SONY ERICSSON NEO PLAYER

Sony Ericsson rebounded frorn a run of mediocre releases at MWC with a fine trio of Android Gingerbread phones spearheaded by the Xperia Play, This features PSP Go-style, slide-out game controls and PlayStation Suite, which allows you to connect to the PlayStation Network and download games.Thefour-inchscreen,1GHz Snapdragon processor and Adreno GPU offer very respectable graphical chops, with Sony Ericsson claiming games will run at 60fps, What, all garnes? Elsewhere, the Xperia Pro takes on BlackBerry while the Neo boasts a cracking, eight-meg camera with Sony Exmor sensor.

Theres a lot to love about tne Xperia play. It's a chunky phone, but understandabIy so, as it has to accommodate not just a4-inch,480 x 854 screen, but aIso a sIide-our gamepad, and a battery that can fight through severaI hours of non-stop game time - five and a haIfhours, to be exact. The gamepad itself sIides our with very reassuring soIidity, and for the most part  is brilliant. The tactile response is fantastic and nothing seems easily breakable
play is powerful enough to run  those games-rest assured,it is has a lGHz processor with 380MB RAM, and we haven't found a game that lagged yet. We did, howcver, find that games had a tendency to crash some times, but the version of the software on our review device is not the final rectail version to be relcased in June, so hopefully some bugs just need ironing out.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play And Arc To Get Android 2.3.3 Update

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Arc getting Android 2.3.3 update next week, Facebook integration in tow and that would seem to make them the first non-Nexus phones to get the update. Facebook inside Xperia promises to more deeply integrate your phone (including your calendar, contacts, and even music) with the social network……….

Sony Ericsson‘s Xperia Arc and Xperia Play will waltz into the land of Android 2.3.3 next week and assuming that UK mobile networks approve, users should see their handsets ready for upgrade very soon. Both the Xperia Arc and Xperia Play will get updated to Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and gain the new deeper Facebook integration next week. Facebook inside Xperia will add a handful of new features to Xperia handsets. Liking music currently playing on your phone will send an update to your Facebook feed, which can be clicked through for more information via Sony Ericsson‘s TrackID, whilst photos can be uploaded and now downloaded and kept on your phone. Your Facebook calendar will also sync to the phone and your Google account, meaning we’ll have no excuse for missing birthdays ever again. Contacts on your phone can also be more deeply connected to Facebook profiles, and you’ll be able to see their status updates, interests, and more. Calum MacDougall, Head of Web Service Partnerships at Sony Ericsson told us that Facebook inside Xperia was not about making a ”Facebook phone” but “enriching the experience” of using the phone alongside Facebook’s features.

MacDougall also said that these embedded Facebook features would be an ongoing project- but that it would focus on Sony Ericsson’s strength in entertainment, and vowed they wouldn’t look to replicate features that already worked well on the original Facebook app. Any Facebook-phobes will be glad to hear that these Facebook features can be switched off, either individually, or all-together, although we’re waiting to hear back from Sony Ericsson on how much space your giant Facebook photo library will take on the phone. Facebook inside Xperia will come to all future Xperia models, and all phones released so far this year. Expect to find the new features on Xperia Neo, Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro later this year.
