Xperia Play (PSP Phone) will be the rival of Nintendo 3DS, and not the PSP2 (Sony NGP)

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play will be the competitor of the Nintendo 3DS for 2011, and not the PSP2.

Sony will be launching two light devices this year, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play (or the PSP Phone) and the Sony NGP, which is also popularly known as the PSP2, or the second-generation of the popular Playstation Portable brand. The big difference of the two will be the operating system, and some difference in the technical specifications. You can check out the unofficial specification comparison of the PSP2 and the PSP Phone inAndroid Community.
Unlike the Sony NGP, Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is a phone, and will be using Android 2.3 Gingerbread as pre-installed operating system, which means, users can also play games available for Android smartphones, aside from the Playstation emulators.
Engadget was one of the first websites to preview the capabilities of the Xperia Play when it comes to larger games in terms of file size. According to EngadgetSony Ericsson Xperia Play or the Playstation Phone successfully delivered smooth gaming experience.
The site noted: “The handful of games we tried — Ridge Racer Revolution, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4, Gundam Battle Assault 2, and Super Mario Bros. 4 — all ran pretty well.”
Both Xperia Play and Sony NGP have no release dates yet, but Xperia Play is expected to come earlier than the PSP2. According to rumors, Sony is eyeing the second quarter of this year for Xperia Play, while the Sony NGP or the PSP 2 will be launched in “at least one territory by the end of holiday 2011,” says a report fromIndependent. It means, the PSP2 will not be arriving in the USA in the first three quarters of 2011.
It is highly possible that Xperia Play will be Sony’s device to compete with Nintendo 3DS, which is expected to arrive in the US in March. But unlike the Xperia Play,Nintendo 3DS will not support voice calls and text messaging, but rumored to be using 3G connectivity too to get access to the internet aside from WiFi. Also, Nintendo 3DS supports three dimensional display of games, both new and classic.
Speaking of classical games, Nintendo 3DS’ eShop, or the online store where customers can buy software will not become available after launch. Instead, Nintendo said the online shop for the 3DS will be arriving some time in May of this year.

According to IT168, the PlayStation Phone runs Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon QSD8255 paired with the Adreno 205 GPU; there’s a 4-inch display running at 854 x 480, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, 512MB of RAM/ROM and a microSD card slot.
There’s also microUSB and dual microphones for noise cancellation, while the battery is a 1,500mAh unit. An app called PlayStation Pocket is loaded, which seems to be the gaming download store.
